Condo Medicals: What They Check
CONDO Medicals in Liverpool: What They Are and Where to Get One
If you have been told you need a CONDO medical, you are probably looking for two things: a clear explanation of what it actually involves, and somewhere you can get it done quickly. This guide covers both.
What Is a CONDO Medical?
CONDO stands for Contractors on Deployed Operations. A CONDO medical is a formal health assessment required for civilian contractors who are deploying overseas to work alongside UK military forces in operational areas. This applies to people working in logistics, engineering, IT, security, construction and a wide range of other support roles in environments that may include extreme climates, physical demands, long working hours and exposure to conflict zones.
The assessment is a requirement under DEFSTAN 05-129 and DEFCON 697, the Ministry of Defence standards that govern how civilian contractors are prepared for deployment. The purpose is straightforward: to confirm that you are physically and mentally fit to work in the environment you are being sent to.
Who Needs a CONDO Medical?
You will need a CONDO medical if you are a civilian contractor deploying to an operational area in support of the MOD. This includes UK nationals and third-country nationals deploying from the UK or from another location. The requirement applies regardless of your specific role, whether that is a technical, administrative or logistical function.
Your employer or the company managing your deployment will usually confirm the requirement and provide any relevant paperwork as part of the pre-deployment process.
What Does a CONDO Medical Involve?
The assessment is carried out in full by a doctor and covers the key areas of physical and mental fitness relevant to the deployment environment. A clinician will typically review your medical history, current health status, ongoing conditions, medication and any previous treatment that may be relevant.
Depending on the nature and location of the deployment, the appointment may also include observations such as blood pressure, pulse, height and weight, along with a general physical examination. The aim is to confirm that you are fit for the role and the environment, not simply to complete a form.
If you have an existing health condition, the doctor will assess whether it is stable, well managed and unlikely to be significantly worsened by the conditions of deployment. Some conditions may require additional evidence, specialist input or further investigation before a fitness decision can be made.
What to Bring to Your CONDO Medical Appointment
Good preparation makes the appointment straightforward. You should bring:
Any deployment paperwork or forms provided by your employer
Photo identification
A list of your current medication, including dosages
Details of any ongoing health conditions
Relevant hospital letters, specialist reports or previous test results if applicable
If the deployment destination has been confirmed, that information can also help the doctor assess any environment-specific health considerations.
Can a CONDO Medical Be Completed in One Appointment?
In most cases, yes. A straightforward assessment where your health is well documented and your fitness is not in question can usually be completed in a single visit. For patients with tight deployment deadlines, same-day and evening appointments are available at SLM GP, making it easier to get the medical done without taking time off work.
There are situations where it may take longer. If your medical history requires further review, if additional tests are needed, or if a specialist opinion is required for a specific condition, the process will take more time. It is always better to book early rather than leave it to the last minute before a deployment date.
