SLM GP Student Membership Coming Soon
Something new is coming to SLM GP, and it has been designed with students in mind.
We are launching a student membership: an affordable way for students in Liverpool to see a private GP, on terms that fit around lectures, shifts, deadlines and everything else that fills a university term. Full details — pricing, what is included and the opening date — will be published shortly. In the meantime, here is what we are building and why we think it will make a real difference.
Why we are launching a student GP membership
Students tell us the same thing over and over. It is not that they cannot find healthcare. It is that the healthcare they can find rarely fits.
A 9:40am appointment clashes with a lecture. A sore throat that will not shift gets ignored until it gets worse during exam week. A repeat prescription runs low the weekend before a deadline. A question about contraception, low mood or a skin change feels too small to chase but too persistent to forget.
Meanwhile, one-off private appointments can feel like a big decision at exactly the moment you least want to be weighing up cost. Students are, quite reasonably, cautious with money.
A membership solves both problems at once. It makes the cost predictable and modest, and it gives you a clear, established route to a doctor before a problem grows.
What the SLM GP student membership could mean for you
We are building the membership around the things students actually ask for:
Appointments that fit your timetable. Access designed around study and work patterns, not just weekday mornings — so seeing a GP does not mean missing a lecture or a shift.
In-person and remote consultations. You should be able to choose!
A doctor who knows you. SLM GP is a small practice, and that is the point. You will not be re-explaining your history to a different clinician every time. For anything ongoing or personal, that continuity matters enormously.
A city-centre location. We are on Duke Street in the heart of Liverpool, within easy reach of the main university campuses and city-centre student accommodation.
A calm space for the difficult conversations. Sexual health, contraception, mental wellbeing, persistent pain, skin problems — the things that are easier to raise when you are not rushed and not talking to a stranger.
Predictable, transparent costs. You will know what you are paying and what it covers before you join. No surprises.
Designed to be affordable
This is the part we want to be clear about from the start.
A student membership only works if students can actually afford it — comfortably, across a whole academic year, alongside rent, travel and everything else. There is no value in a healthcare plan that becomes the thing you cancel in February.
So affordability is not an afterthought here; it is the design brief. We are setting the price to sit within a realistic student budget, and we will publish it in full, with no hidden extras, so you can judge for yourself before committing to anything.
We would rather more students had reliable access to a GP at a fair price than fewer students paid a premium for it.
Built around student life in Liverpool
Liverpool is a brilliant student city, and a busy one. Moving here — from another part of the UK or from abroad — means finding your feet with a new routine, a new home, and often a new healthcare system.
The membership is intended to be one less thing to work out. A known place to go. A familiar team. A price you have already budgeted for.
It suits you particularly well if you:
- struggle to attend daytime appointments because of your timetable or part-time work
- want faster access for the routine things that keep cropping up
- manage a long-term condition that benefits from regular review
- would value a consistent point of contact rather than starting over each time
- are a parent wanting dependable care in place for a son or daughter living away from home
- would like to keep your NHS GP registration back home if you have moved to Liverpool for university
Supporting physical and mental health
University brings genuine freedom and genuine pressure, often in the same week. Changes in sleep, mood, appetite and concentration are common, and none of it is something you should have to work through alone.
A GP can help work out whether what you are experiencing relates to stress, anxiety, low mood, a physical health problem, medication, or something else entirely — and what would help. The aim is never to medicalise a hard week. It is to give you space to talk it through and make a plan when one is needed.
How it works alongside your NHS GP
The membership complements NHS care — it does not replace it. You should stay registered with an NHS GP practice, and we would always encourage that.
What a membership gives you is a reliable option when you need it.
Full details coming soon
We are finalising pricing, inclusions and the launch date now, and we will publish everything in full before the membership opens.
Student GP membership FAQs
How much will it cost? Pricing will be published in full before launch. We are setting it deliberately at a level intended to be affordable on a student budget, with no hidden charges.
Who is eligible? The membership is designed for students. Full eligibility details will be confirmed at launch.
Can I use a private GP and stay registered with an NHS GP? Yes, and you should. Private GP care sits alongside NHS registration rather than replacing it.
Can a private GP issue prescriptions? Yes. Private GPs issue private prescriptions, which you take to a pharmacy. These are charged at the pharmacy's price for the medicine rather than the NHS prescription levy.
Will remote appointments be available? We intend to offer both remote and in-person consultations. Some symptoms need a physical examination, and your GP will always tell you when that is the case.
Are there any students who are ineligible? Unfortunately we cannot accept medical students from the University of Liverpool
